Is Web Ring participation considered detrimental by some? - 01/30/2005
I realize this is a loaded question. What I am curious about is if anyone has experienced any negative opinions on webring participation by those outside this community, perhaps mistaking the ring codes for banner adds, pop-up adds, or spam?

I have not experienced any myself.

I have never heard of anyone actually saying that, but there are
a minority of members who will go to any length to conceal the navigation bar. So I suppose this situation speaks for itself.

In five years not at all.

I think we have all had that happen but it appears to be more of a problem with sites that seem to think nav bars spoil the look of their pages or simply have no desire to share traffic. Having questioned several site owners that tampered with the code it's usually because they hated the colour of the bar or some other rather lame reason. As far as I am concerned, if they don't like the bar they shouldn't bother joining the ring.

I'm middle age, so the whole concept of computers and going online and surfing the web isn't anything I grew up with. (I just said that, because at our age, this whole experience feels much like the first time I ever drove a car on my own, or the first time I ever did my own tax form--I'm able to do it, but it's more difficult to learn then if I grew up doing this, and, I suspect, more amazing to me, then those who grew up with computers in their home the entire time.) With that being said, even I've never confused webrings as banner ads, nor have I ever received negative e-mail from anyone upset with the rings I'm involved with or the one I managed. And, as one who absolutely despises banner ads, pop-ups, pop-unders and all the other annoying advertisement methods online, I also have to admit to being (OK this is embarrassing, but true LOL) thrilled to see webrings on people's pages, and wanting to go check out different ones that interest me. If I find a site with zillions of webring navbars on a page, I might well be the only one who slowly goes down the entire list and clicks onto the ones that sound interesting.
Oh, I guess I should add this, just in case anyone is wondering--no, I'm not associated in any way with the business end of WebRing, although, of course, I manage a ring and belonging to several others.i.e. I'm not getting anything from WebRing for this endorsement. LOL

I've had my site since 1995, and in this Webmaster's opinion, the most detrimental things to have on your site are search engines. You spend all that time building a site with original content (hopefully), only to put search engines on it and have your visitor click away. I always laughed at that. I do have a search engine box associated with DoubleClick on one of my sites, but I get paid every time a person uses it. Thankfully, it is not used that often. If it was, it would be history no matter how much I am getting paid for its usage.
