Of all the Churches of Africa, that of Egypt is most ancient; this Coptic Church is historically centered in the important city of Alexandria. Its Patriarch is called the "Pope" of this region. The word "Coptic" means "Egyptian." Both Orthodox and Catholic, the Coptic Church is also authentically African, indeed, the most venerable tradition of the entire continent.
