Pictured: "Marie Camargo," circa 1730, painted by Parisian artist Nicolas Lancret (January22, 1690 –September 14, 1743). His subject: French (as opposed to Flemish)/Belgian dancer Marie Anne de Cupis de Camargo (April 15, 1710 - some time in 1770) of the Paris Opera Ballet. La Camargo, as she was known, is credited with being the first woman to perform an entrechat quatre (meaning she leapt into the air from fifth position, crossed her legs rapidly back and forth twice (four crossings total) and landed on both feet, again in fifth position).
This is a new form of sword dancing, performing sword combat moves to music, this is usually very fast and dramatic, and has been enjoyed by young and old alike. For examples of our performances please visit our video gallery.
