Cockatoos

The cockatoo family consists of 21 species. These birds are found in the Australasian geographical region that includes Australia, Philippines, Eastern Indonesia islands, to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. They’re among the largest of the parrots with the exception of the smallest member of the family, the cockatiel. Cockatoos have mostly black, gray, white, and perhaps a patch of orange or yellow on their crest. Pet owners cherish these birds for their personalities and talking ability. The farmers in their native lands consider them major pests of crops. Cockatoos is a collection of web sites providing information on maintaining these birds as pets, and their breeding practices. Potential cockatoo owners should study this group of web sites to learn all you can before making this purchase. Everyone from the potential pet owner to someone with an interest in Tropical birds will enjoy surfing this webring.

Have you ever observed a humming-bird moving about in an aerial dance among the flowers - a living prismatic gem.... it is a creature of such fairy-like loveliness as to mock all description.
~- W.H. Hudson, Green Mansions

I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn.
~- Henry David Thoreau

I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs.
~- Joseph Addison

Those little nimble musicians of the air, that warble forth their curious ditties, with which nature hath furnished them to the shame of art.

A BIRD RESCUER

My job and life is to help birds,

I was born with the drive to fulfil their needs. I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless birds without planning or selection.

I have bought bird food with my last pound. I have scratched many a plucked body with a bare hand, only to be bitten.

I have hugged birds vicious and afraid. I have fallen in love a thousand times, and I have cried into the fast cooling feathers of a lifeless body too many times to count.

I know of no bird unworthy of my time. I want to live forever if there are no Birds in Heaven, but I believe there are.

Why would God make something so perfect as birds and then leave them behind?

I am always saddened that so many birds need the help of rescuers.

We are a quiet but determined army and we are making a difference every day.

There is nothing more fulfilling than warming an orphan bird, nothing more rewarding than saving a life, no higher recognition than watching them thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing a bird play who, only days earlier was too weak to eat and very near deaths’ door.

By the love of those I have been privileged to rescue, I too have been rescued.

I know what true unconditional love really is, for I have seen it shining in the eyes of so many, ever grateful for so very little. My work is never done, my home is never quiet. My wallet is always empty, but my heart is always full…. I am a bird rescuer…..

If you're thinking where to keep your cockatoo cage, think of a place where people visit quite regularly. Since your cockatoo is very social, they are required to be kept in a room which is visited often. Also place the cage at eye level in an area which gets moderate sunlight.

Most of the cockatoos do not require to be washed or bathed to maintain their hygiene. Cockatoos are extremely clean by nature and preen themselves regularly. Bathing is quite unusual for birds, as they do take care of themselves, but then it can be considered as owners preference. In their natural habitat, some cockatoos may like to get wet in the rain while some may fly for cover.

The diet of the cockatoo mostly includes fresh fruits, vegetables, parrot pellets, large hookbill seed mix, etc. They are fond of eating fresh fruits. The type of fruit they eat the most cannot be determined because every cockatoo is different and the preference may vary. They may like to eat fresh corn, baked rice, cooked sweet potatoes, etc. Do not feed them avocado as they are toxic for birds.
