I was on the carrier USS Kearsarge cvs33..USS Hornet..USS Hancock. The ship you are refering to (the Dan E.Evans) was our DE & we wer on menovers with the aussi Carrier Melborn .They menovered with our escort & we had their escorts. When the Evans was to cross in front of the Melborn with another DE.the timing was off (whos ?).But remember it very well. The Melborn's bowl was leaking bad,as was the Evans. The Melborn Shored up the Evans to its side & we followed the Melborn to Australia as a protecter & security .Ausi .Carriers only had one Launch station.Very nerrow. So you can imagin the gash that was in its bow.the Evans lost 19 men from its fwd engin room.in seconds after hit.thay did an exclent job saving the Evans with its quick thinking & savy crew.I commend them .
