Original purpose of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western was to bring Scranton to the world. In the process, it became a major trunkline. It was a very important link for commuters in New Jersey. Lackawanna had a 34-mile branch to Ithaca. It ran between Owego on the DL&W main line and the college town of Ithaca on Cayuga Lake. It had important branches to Utica and to Syracuse to Oswego. It even had a branch to the resort community of Richfield Springs.

The Maybrook Line was important to New England before the advent of Penn Central and before the Poughkeepsie Bridge burned. This piece of the railroad carried freight from Maybrook Yard, across the Poughkeepsie Bridge to Hopewell Junction where it joined a line from Beacon. The railroad then went to Brewster, then Danbury, and finally to Cedar Hill Yard in New Haven. See the effects of this fire on Eastern Railroading.
