Created by Sony, the Minidisc was released in late 1992. It was Sony's hope that this would be the the digital replacement to cassettes, similar to how CDs had for the most part been replaced by CDs. Originally based on ATRAC compression, it ultimately supported a linear PCM recording option. While Minidiscs did not live up to Sony's hope, there are still a number of devices and enthusiasts worldwide who still avidly use them.
