U.S. scientists say grapefruit juice may help some smokers stave off cancer. Researchers stress smoking is an unhealthy, potentially fatal habit that should be avoided. However, they found drinking grapefruit juice may help reduce the risk of developing cancer from tobacco use. In a small study of 49 smokers, researchers at the University of Hawaii found drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduced the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, thought to activate cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. The findings were presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Smoking began with the Indians. They smoked tobacco for ritual and spiritual purposes, not as an everyday habit. And because they added botanicals and flavored herbs to the tobacco in their pipes, they cut down on the nicotine content. The more you add to tobacco, the less nicotine it will have. Although you can buy herbal cigarettes in some natural food stores, here are a few
roll-your-own fillers for you to try: rosemary, (used in tobacco mixtures for centuries in England), beech tree leaves (smoked by Germans during WWI), corn silk, tonka beans, myrica gale (used by Norwegians), licorice, sage, or morjoram.

In the southeastern United States, particurally in Appalachia, people who want to stop smoking chew on a birch branch to help curb the oral fixation related to the smoking habit.

Spearmint has long been used as a successful cure for stress headaches. Like peppermint, it is good for nervousness, which often causes headaches. Since spearmint is an antispasmodic and diuretic, it is also good for menstrual-related problems (which often cause headaches). You can prepare spearmint soup by cooking tender, fresh spearmint leaves in water with eggs - like egg-drop soup. Or brew a spearmint tea.

The 16th century Europeans made a tea by steeping 5 grams of fresh basil in a cupful of water, and then drank it to eliminate stuffiness, caused by inflamed membranes. The Japanese use basil tea for this same purpose. Pungent oils such as thymol and camphor in the plant help open clogged passages.

Carrots may help lower cholesterol levels. Carrots are a
good source of soluble fiber, which help your body to get rid of cholesterol.

Eating avocados, almonds, and olive oil decreases levels of the bad LDL cholesterol. What these foods have in common is that they are sources of monounsaturated fats, the best type of fat to include in your diet because it actually helps lower cholesterol. Eating 1/2 to 1-1/2 avocados a day is better than using a low fat diet to reduce cholesterol. You can eat sliced, raw avocados in salads or spread them on bread or crackers.
