The primary martial art is Capoeira, which is considered a martial art, but often interpreted as a dance. It is very athletic, and can involve moves that look like gymnastics. The misunderstanding that it is a dance was part of the camouflage that allowed African slaves to practice it with impunity. It is often synonymously identified with black people. Traditionally, practitioners take turns moving with a partner in the style of sparring, and singing and playing berimbau.
