Patrick O'Brian (1914-2000) is one of the greatest writers of historical fiction. His series of 20 Aubrey / Maturin novels tell the story of Jack Aubrey, a British naval captain in the Napoleonic era, and his friend the ship's surgeon, Stephen Maturin.
