The New York & Northern was part of a Bronx to Boston route with the New York & New England Railroad via Danbury and Hartford. Financial failure forced the line to be leased to the New York Central in 1895. It became the Putnam Division.

The Central New England Railway (CNE) / Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad between Pine Plains and Millerton over Winchell Mountain. This line was built by the Dutchess & Columbia Railroad in 1870-71. It was part of the ND&C RR from 1876 to 1905 when the CNE took over. From Shekomeko east to Millerton the line was abandoned by the CNE on 25 January 1925. From Shekomeko west to Pine Plains the line was abandoned by the New Haven on 21 October 1935.

The Hudson River Line opened in 1849. Below 30th Street, railroad cars drawn by horses funneled goods from the West Side railyards to Spring Street, with stops that today's subway riders will recognize: 23rd Street, 14th, Christopher. Steam engines replaced horses in 1867. 1934 saw the completion of the elevated West Side Freight Line. Decline and fall of the line in the 1960's to 1980's.

The Big Four Bridge fell into disuse after the Big Four Railroad's parent company, the New York Central Railroad, was merged into the Penn Central in 1968. The Big Four Bridge's former traffic was then routed over Louisville's Fourteenth Street Bridge. By 1969 both approach spans had been removed and sold for scrap. As a result, the Big Four Bridge became the first Louisville bridge to fall out of use, and gained the nickname 'Bridge That Goes Nowhere'. Now it is on its way back as a pedestrian and bike bridge.
