Red Wings drive Blackhawks to brink of elimination

Last night, a power play goal by defenseman Jakub Kindl and an empty net goal gave the Wings a 2-0 victory that left the Blackhawks down 3-1 in games. Detroit were backstopped by another dazzling game in goal by Jimmy Howard, who blocked all 28 shots the Hawks threw at him for his second career playoff shutout.



The Red Wings sent their 100th consecutive sellout crowd of 20,066 at Joe Louis Arena home in giddy anticipation of a stunning second-round upset. The Wings, who barely made the playoffs and are now poised to end the season of the NHL's No. 1 regular season team.


Red Wings Take 2-1 Series Lead

Tonight the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks in game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart midway through the second period. Patrick Kane scored in the third period to pull Chicago within one. Pavel Datsyuk restored the 2 goal cushion getting off a wrist shot from the left side that went in and out of the net before Corey Crawford saw it. Game 4 is Thursday night in Detroit.


Red Wings Tie Series

Detroit out-shot Chicago by a wide margin in taking the second game in their series with Chicago 4-1. The Blackhawks scored first but the Red Wings came back with 4 unanswered goals from Damien Brunner, Brendan Smith, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula. Game 3 is Monday at Joe Louis Arena.


Blackhawks Take First Game



One of the NHL's biggest rivalries, the Red Wings and the Blackhawks, resumed tonight in the second-round of the Stanley Cup. The Chicago Blackhawks won 4-1 at the United Center, Chicago. The game had been tied after 2 periods but Chicago scored 3 in the third period including an empty netter. Game 2 is Saturday.



Red Wings Complete Comeback, Oust Ducks in Game 7


Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula each had a goal and an assist, and the Detroit Red Wings finished off the Anaheim Ducks with a 3-2 victory in Game 7 on Sunday night. Detroit now faces top-seeded Chicago in the second round.



Deciding Game Tonight

In Game 6 on Friday night, Henrik Zetterberg scored his second goal 1:04 into overtime, lifting the Red Wings to a 4-3 win over Anaheim after they blew a two-goal lead late in the third period.

The deciding game begins at 10:00 PM (ET) at the Honda Center, Anaheim.


Ducks Take 3-2 Series Lead

Last night, the Anaheim Ducks took a 3 games to 2 series lead over the Red Wings. The Ducks won 3-2 when center Nick Bonino scored 1:54 into overtime.

Game 6 is Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. If the Wings win that — and so far, no team has won two in a row in this first-round series — Game 7 is Sunday in Anaheim.

Tonight, the Red Wings tied their series against the Anaheim Ducks with a 3-2 overtime win. The Red Wings' Swiss left-winger Damien Brunner scored the winning goal at 15:10 of overtime. The fifth game of the series takes place Wednesday at the Honda Center, Anaheim, California.


Anaheim Ducks Take 2-1 Series Lead

The Ducks beat the Red Wings 4-0 Saturday night to take a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference playoffs.



The game saw Detroit's Justin Abdelkader ejected for a violent hit on Toni Lydman. Abdelkader was given a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct. Now the Red Wings will have to wait to find out if the 26-year-old left wing will be suspended. Game 4 is Monday night in Detroit.


Wings Even Series

The Red Wings survived a late collapse to win 5-4 to even their series with the Anaheim Ducks. Detroit blew a three-goal lead in the third but rallied in overtime thanks to Gustav Nyquist's power-play goal.

Game 3 is Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena.


Anaheim Ducks earn 3-1 win

Last night, 42-year-old Teemu Selanne scored the game-winning goal in Anaheim's to 3-1 victory over the Red Wings in the opening game of the Western Conference quarterfinal series. The teams play again Thursday at Honda Center in Anaheim.


Howard signs six-year contract extension

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that they have signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a six-year contract extension.

There were reports last week that a deal was close, and TSN reported Thursday the extension is worth $31.8 million.

Howard, 29, is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million contract. He was an all-star last season and has won at least 35 games in three straight seasons.

Martin Frk, the Red Wings' top pick in last year's NHL entry draft, had five goals and three assists in his junior playoff game last night. It was a franchise scoring record for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 19-year-old right-winger is from Bochov, Czech Republic.
