The Stone Circle

A Webring devoted to Stone Circles, Megaliths and other Prehistoric Sites around the world. Our sites feature hundreds of images, travel guides, archaeology, archaeoastronomy, and new thinking on the subject. Sites hand-picked for quality but not censored for controversial ideas. Stonehenge, the Anasazi, Cahokia, Callanish, henge monuments.

I propose a theory about megaliths: they might have been erected as an answer to the ocean rise which occured during neolithic period.

Maulinward Cairn and Row 20th March 2012 A nice early start this morning. We're heading for the Sheeps Head Peninsula and the stone circle at Gorteaneish near Ahakista. The weather's not up to much... It's another one of those days where they promised us sunshine but all we have are grey skies and a bit of drizzle. We make our way through Durrus a...

Ringfort at Cullomane East 12th March 2012 I've been meaning to visit the circle at Cullomane East for some time. It's only up the road and we've probably driven past it loads of times en route for somewhere else. So today is the day to put that right ! We don't head off until the afternoon, but as I said before, it's not that far to go. Out to th...

Nowen Hill and Cullenagh Lake 13th March 2012 It's a grey start to the day, but the Sun is starting to show signs of life, so we are going to head off to Baurgorm Stone Circle today.... then just see where the road takes us after that ! To get to Baurgorm we take the same route as yesterday and park up by the O'Neill monument. Joanie decides to si...

Mill Little 10th March 2012 Today we're going to have another look for the elusive boulder burial at Coolcoulaghta. Looking at the map when we got home yesterday, it looks so obvious at the side of the road. A quick check on the national monument survey web site to check that it is actually still there.... it is ! So, today, we are going to approa...

A complex complex at Mill Little and yesterdays burial found !

Dunmanus Bay 9th March 2012 Just a quick visit today. We had to go to Ballydehob, so thought that we'd pop along to the boulder burial a few miles up the road at Rathruane More and possibly a few more sites further up that way. The boulder burial is easy to find, in a field, just off the road on the Ballydehob to Durrus road. You can park in the g...

Drombeg 4th March 2012 Just a quickie today. We popped in on Drombeg Circle, as we were passing. It's probably the most visited megalithic site in West Cork. Indeed, it was our first Irish Circle and we've been back a few times, including for the Winter Solstice. It's easy to find, turn off the N71 at Leap and head for Glandore. Go straight throug...
